[ ITINERARY ] - [ DATES AND RATES 2001] - [ DATES AND RATES 2002] - [ CONTACT US ]

Day 1: Windhoek - Sossusvlei

The camps idyllic setting

The safari begins early in Windhoek. Guests meet their guide and are transferred by road to Kulala Tented Camp, nestled into the side of a mountain. The camp consists of 6 Meru-style tents with en suite bathroom facilities and showers. The tents are linked to the main dinning room, bar, sitting area and swimming pool by stone pathways. The interiors are simple yet stylish and have solar powered 12V lighting. The main dinning area, bar and reception are built from stone with a canvas roof. There is a fully stocked bar.

Day 2: Sossusvlei

The mysterious deadvlei

We awake very early and travel north along the Tsauchab River bed to the towering dunes surrounding Sossusvlei. At Sossusvlei the Tsauchab River is swallowed by a sea of orange dunes, some as high as twelve hundred feet. This early morning drive into the vlei allows one to experience and photograph the morning light on the dunes. We return to Kulala Tented Camp for the night. Afternoon activities are enjoyed on the property; guests can spend time taking in the desert scenery and its unique fauna and flora.

Day 3: Sossusvlei - Swakopmund (350 km)

The lobby of the charming Hansa Hotel

Leaving the Namib Naukluft after breakfast, we travel north west via the Kuiseb Canyon to Swakopmund, enjoying a packed lunch en route. The scenery changes from sand dunes, to dark craggy canyons and then to the flat gravel plains inland from Swakopmund. En route, we will make stops to take in the Moon Landscape and the Welwitschia plants. We reach Swakopmund this afternoon and stay at the Hansa Hotel for the night. Each of the bedrooms is en suite, with under-floor heating in the bathrooms. Rooms also have television, phones, and all the amenities to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Days 4 and 5: The Skeleton Coast and Damaraland (415 km)

From Swakopmund guests travel north up the infamous Skeleton Coast. En route we stop at the Cape Cross seal colony, home to thousands of breeding Cape fur seals. Continuing the journey up the coast, past the few remaining shipwreck sites, we cross the windswept gravel plains with an icy green Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the endless desert on the other.

A lone Giraffe

Leaving the coast behind us we travel inland to Damaraland Camp, arriving in time for an afternoon walk. Situated on the northern face of the Huab River valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains, Damaraland Camp offers its guests endless and dramatic vistas. Accommodation is in comfortable tented rooms, with en suite facilities. The dining room and pub are combined under canvas, and an open fire is enjoyed on calm evenings. A unique feature of the camp is the rock pool built into the side of a cliff.

This friendly camp offers walks and drives in one of the most intriguing wilderness areas in Namibia. Although wildlife is not concentrated, Damaraland Camp is situated where the rare Desert Elephant roams, alongside Gemsbok (Oryx), Springbok, Ostrich and other hardy desert animals. Rare succulent plants also manage to eke out an existence in this harsh landscape.

Day 6 and 7: Central Etosha - Ongava Tented Camp (400 km)

From Damaraland we continue to Twyfelfontein to view the famous Bushman rock engravings before heading on to Ongava Tented Camp, situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the 68,000 Acre, privately owned Ongava Game Reserve.

A rhino and her calf

Accommodation is comprised of large comfortable walk-in tents with en-suite facilities. All meals are enjoyed in the main dining area, which is set under thatch and overlooks an active waterhole. There is a small swimming pool for cooling off. Activities at Ongava Tented Camp include game drives into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha where Lion, Elephant, Cheetah, Gemsbok, Springbok, and Hartebeest can be seen. In addition, walks with armed guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava boasts resident White and Black Rhino, affording guests wonderful opportunities to see both species at close quarters, and perhaps track them on foot.

Day 8 and 9: Eastern Etosha (180 km)

We travel east through Etosha toward Fort Namutoni gate and Mushara Lodge where we spend the next two nights. En route, we stop at the numerous perennial springs found along the edge of the pan looking for lion, leopard, elephant and black rhino as well as all the plains game of the park.

Plains game at a watering hole in Etosha

Mushara Lodge is located on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park, offering a completely different experience than that of Ongava. Among the animals to be seen in this section of the park are Damara Dik-Dik and Blackfaced Impala. Accommodation is in luxury bungalows with air-conditioning and en suite facilities. There is a swimming pool, sitting area and dining room at the main lodge.

Day 10 and 11: Etosha National Park - Okonjima (350 km)

We travel south via Tsumeb, Otavi and Otjiwarongo to Okonjima Guest Farm, situated in the Omboroko Mountains which make up the western reaches of the Waterberg formation. Okonjima is a privately owned nature sanctuary, which is owned and operated by the Hanssen family. It is an excellent finish to the safari.

Close encounters with big cats

Activities here centre on bird watching, walks and learning about the AFRICATS project that they have started. For the keen photographer there are excellent opportunities to photograph big cats, as well as several other species. Accommodation at Okonjima consists of ten comfortable double rooms, with en suite facilities. There is also a swimming pool on the property. Meals are served either in the main lodge or around an open fire.

Day 12: Okonjima - Windhoek (250 km)

Time permitting, the group will enjoy a Bushman Trail Walk in the morning before brunch. We depart Okonjima and return to Windhoek at about 3pm where the safari ends. Connect with your flight out in the afternoon or evening.
