| This is a wonderful 15 day safari visiting some of the most important rock art of southern Africa. From sites in South Africa's Cederberg, Drakensberg, and Malelane Mountains, we move on to the spectacular cave art in Zimbabwe's Matobo Hills, then Botswana's Tsodilo Hills, ending at the Twyfelfontein rock engravings in Namibia. We stay at some of southern Africa's loveliest camps and lodges and, in addition to rock art, will have the opportunity to do some great game-viewing, and interact with the local communities representing a diverse array of cultural groups. Upon arrival, your specialist guide, Conraad de Rosner, will meet you and together you transfer by road to Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve where accommodation has been reserved for three nights.
Bushman's Kloof is located in South Africa's Cederberg Mountains. Wide open plains, ravines, waterfalls and prehistoric rock formations characterize this ecological oasis. For many generations the San or "Bushmen" lived in this area, and today over 125 remarkable rock paintings testify to their existence. Game drives, guided rock art tours, mountain biking, and swimming in crystal clear rock pools are all part of the experience. Comfort and cuisine of the highest quality are a hallmark of Bushman's Kloof. Each of the seven double rooms and nine suites has a generous en suite bathroom and a private terrace, with fabulous views. In: 09 March 2002 Out: 12 March 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals and activities March 12 to 15: Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse After breakfast and the morning activity we depart Bushmans Kloof and transfer by road to Cape Town International Airport to connect with a scheduled flight to Durban. Upon arrival at Durban International Airport, we will transfer you by road to Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse where accommodation has been reserved for three nights. Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a gourmet hideaway tucked into the beautiful Kamberg valley in the Drakensberg Mountains. Cleopatra has only five luxurious en suite double/twin rooms and one spacious suite. The dining/living room is cantilevered over a trout filled dam which overlooks stunning craggy mountains. Cleopatra is a short drive from the Drakensberg's most spectacular rock art sites, and other activities include walks across the fields and mountains, swimming in the crystal clear mountain streams, and great bird watching. Horse riding can be arranged close by and there is trout fishing on the farm and at many dams in the area. In: 12 March 2002 Out: 15 March 2002 Basis: Inclusive of dinner and breakfast daily March 15 to 17: Bongani Lodge After breakfast we depart Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse and continue by road to Bongani Mountain Lodge where accommodation has been reserved for two nights. Bongani Mountain Lodge is located on the Methethomusha Reserve at the foothills of the Malelane Mountains. The lodge has 20 spacious air-conditioned chalets and 10 suites, all which have en suite bathrooms, and a private leisure deck with sweeping views of the valley. Twice-daily game drives and bush walks are conducted by skilled rangers and trackers. Dinner is served in a traditional outdoor "boma", where guests can enjoy stirring performances by the Gambule Theatre Group who depict the history, aspirations and concerns of the local people. Over two hundred rockart sites have been recorded on the Methethomusha Reserve, many of them by Conraad de Rosner. The rock art is generally older than that of the Drakensberg showing similarities to the art of the Motobo's in Zimbabwe. In: 15 March 2002 Out: 17 March 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals and game activities March 17 to 19: Camp Amalinda After breakfast and the morning game activity we depart Bongani Mountain Lodge and transfer by road to Nelspruit Airport to connect with a private charter flight to Bulawayo (via Pietersburg to clear customs). Upon arrival in Bulawayo, we are transferred by vehicle to Camp Amalinda where accommodation has been reserved for two nights.
Camp Amalinda is tucked away amongst the mysterious granite domes of Zimbabwe's Matobo Hills. This very luxurious camp consists of ten individual rooms, all creatively designed to incorporate massive boulders. Each open plan room has en suite facilities. The main lodge is nestled into a bushman shelter , which enjoys a panoramic view of the Matobos. Activities are varied and include game drives and walks into the Matobo Game Park, tracking Rhino, horse riding, trips to Bushman caves to view rock art, and visits to Cecil Rhodes' Grave. Elephant back trails and an overnight stay in a nearby African village can also be arranged. In: 17 March 2002 Out: 19 March 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals and game activities Camp March 19 to 21: Vumbura Camp After breakfast and the morning game activity we depart Camp Amalinda and transfer by road to Bulawayo Airport to connect with a private charter flight to Vumbura Camp (via Maun to clear customs). Accommodation has been reserved for two nights. In addition to regular camp activities, guests will enjoy a guided excursion to the rock art of the Tsodilo Hills. Vumbura is a remote luxury camp situated on a private concession in the Okavango. Each one of Vumbura's eight spacious luxury tented rooms has a bathroom en suite, as well as an outdoor shower. The main area is tucked beneath a canopy of indigenous trees with a superb view across the floodplain. Vumbura offers both water and land activities, including mekoro rides, boat trips (water levels permitting), game-drives in open safari vehicles, and nature walks. Guests could see Red Lechwe from a mekoro in the morning, then Sable antelope from a vehicle in the afternoon. Other species include elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. In: 19 March 2002 Out: 21 March 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals, activities, laundry and drinks (except imported premium brands) March 21 to 23: Damaraland Camp After the morning game activity and brunch we depart Vumbura Camp and transfer by private charter flight to Damaraland Camp (via Windhoek to clear customs). Accommodation has been reserved for two nights. Apart from regular camp activities at Damaraland, guests will be taken on a guided tour of the rockart at Twyfelfontein. Situated on the northern face of the Huab River valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains, Damaraland Camp offers its guests endless and dramatic vistas. Accommodation at Damaraland is in nine comfortable tented rooms, with en suite facilities. The dining room and pub are combined under canvas, and an open fire is enjoyed on calm evenings. This friendly camp offers walks and drives in one of the most intriguing wilderness areas in Namibia. Although wildlife is not concentrated, Damaraland Camp is situated where the rare Desert Elephant roams, alongside Gemsbok (Oryx), Springbok, Ostrich and other hardy desert animals.
