MALAWI AND ZAMBIA'S BEST BIRDING SAFARI |
||
| This 11-day safari is led by Geoff Lockwood, one of southern Africa's top birding experts, authors, painters and wildlife lecturers. Malawi has many National Parks, each harboring a number of different vegetation types and bird species. Guests will travel to Liwonde National Park and the Shire River for some of Africa's best birding - featuring White Backed Night Herons, Pels Fishing Owl, Boehm's Bee-Eater, Palm Nut Vulture, Brown Breasted Barbets and huge flocks of African Skimmer. Guests then move to the Bachestegia woodlands and evergreen forests for Bar-Tailed Trogons, Akalats, Alethes, and then move onto the mountain grasslands of the Nyika Plateau for Augur Buzzard, Pallied Harrier, Mountain and Churring Cisticola. November 3-7, 2002: Mvuu Wilderness Camp Guests arrive at Lilongwe Airport. They are met by a Wilderness Safaris representative and transferred by light aircraft to Mvuu Wilderness Camp, where accommodation has been reserved for four nights. The Mvuu Wilderness Camp is situated along the banks of the Shire River in the heart of the Liwonde National Park, Malawi's premier wildlife reserve. Mvuu offers exclusive accommodation in five spacious and luxurious tents, each with an en suite bathroom and private veranda overlooking the lagoon. Activities will be conducted by boat, vehicles and on foot. Birds are prolific, especially along the Shire River and what really makes Mvuu such a special birding destination is the preponderance of "specials" which are easily seen. Palmnut Vulture, Lillian's Lovebird, Brownbreasted Barbet, Osprey, Pel's Fishing Owl, Livingstone's flycatcher and Boehm's bee-eater are all relatively common. The range of habitats - open water, marsh, lagoon, thicket, woodland and riverine forest - all within easy reach makes for a variety of birding virtually unmatched in Central Africa. In: 03 November 2002 Out: 07 November 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals, game activities and laundry November 7- 10: Chelinda Lodge After breakfast and the morning game activity, guests are collected at Mvuu's airstrip and transferred by light aircraft to Chelinda Lodge, where accommodation has been reserved for three nights. Chelinda Lodge enjoys one of the most magnificent settings in Africa, with panoramic views over the rolling grasslands of the Nyika Plateau. Guests are accommodated in eight individual log cabins, each with en suite facilities and its own fireplace. Activities are undertaken by vehicle and on foot. As with Mvuu, Nyika has many easily seen birding "specials". The montane forests house amongst others Sharps Akalat, Oliveflanked Robin, Whitechested Alethe, Bartailed Trogon, Pinkbreasted Turtle Dove, Fulleborns Black Boubou, Placid, Grey Olive and Yellow Bellied Bulbuls, Waller's and Slenderbilled Redwinged Starlings. On the rolling grasslands we can expect to see Augur Buzzard, Pallied Harrier, Mountain and Churring Cisticola, Denham's Bustard, Red-Winged Francolin, Red-Tufted Malachite Sunbird and Mountain Nightjar. The lower-lying Miombo Woodland is home to Spotted Creeper, White-Winged Babbling Starling, Rufous Bellied Tit, Slaty and Whitetailed Blue Flycatcher, Pennantwinged Nightjar and many more. In: 07 November 2002 Out: 10 November 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals and game activities. November 10-13: Kapani Camp After breakfast and the morning game activity guests will be collected at Chelinda's airstrip and transferred by light aircraft to the Mfuwe airstrip in Eastern Zambia (flying via Mzuzu to clear customs). Guests will be collected at Mfuwe and transferred by vehicle to Kapani Lodge, where accommodation has been reserved for three nights.
The natural beauty, variety and concentration of wildlife within the South Luangwa National Park make this one of Africa's finest parks. The game is so prolific that Luangwa is called "the crowded valley". Leopard, Kudu and Giraffe are often seen. Lion, Hyena, Buffalo, waterbuck and Impala are all plentiful and over 400 species of birds have been recorded. Kapani Camp, built in the 1970's by the legendary Norman Carr, is situated in the game rich Mfuwe Sector on a lagoon close to the main river. Accommodation is in nine stone chalets, with fans and en suite facilities. The birding species list for the park is over 400 and one of the most impressive features will be the waterbirds in the lagoons. By September Luangwa's famous oxbow lagoons are drying up providing easy fishing for a multitude of herons, pelicans, storks and waders. Waterfowl are also usually abundant. The surrounding plains and woodland ensure excellent birding variety with the larger raptors being well represented. We will hope to see most of the larger eagles and vultures during our stay here. In: 10 November 2002 Out: 13 November 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals and game activities. November 13: Safari Ends After breakfast and the morning game activity guests will be transferred by vehicle to the Mfuwe airstrip to connect with a light aircraft transfer to Lilongwe Airport, where the safari ends. |
