THE LUANGWA ENCOUNTER

The beautiful setting of the South Luangwa National Park

A very flexible private walking safari experience for a small group of four to six friends. This safari operates in the remote south-western section of Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, utilizing three luxury bush camps. The safari follows the course of the beautiful Luangwa River and, with a minimum of four guests, the itinerary is completely flexible. Guests can add nights at Chamilandu, Chindeni, or Bilimungwe, or can extend the safari to include Kuyenda Bush Camp.

Days 1 to 3: Chamilandu Bush Camp

Guests are collected from Mfuwe Airport, gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. Transfer immediately into the National Park, spotting Game en-route to Chamilandu Bush Camp.

The beautiful setting for lunch

Chamilandu Camp enjoys a spectacular setting on a very wide bend in the meandering Luangwa River. The rugged Nchendeni hills, which form the eastern boundary of the Luangwa Valley, provide a magnificent backdrop to view from the rooms and the common area. With only three grass and thatch chalets, equipped with comfortable beds, mosquito nets and en-suite toilet facilities, Chamilandu is either the perfect start or ending to the Luangwa Encounter. Guests spend two days exploring the area by foot and in open game-drive vehicles.

Days 3 to 5: Chindeni Trails Camp

Guests depart Chamilandu early on day three, after a great breakfast, accompanied by a game guide, scout, and porter. There are virtually no roads in this far-flung corner of the Park and, as one heads further downstream, the only way to explore is on foot. The morning is spent on a leisurely six mile walk to the luxurious Chendeni Trails camp, where a delicious lunch awaits.

Dinner overlooking the lagoon

Chindeni Trails Camp, approximately 6 miles downstream from Chamilandu, is one of the most luxurious tented camps in the Luangwa Valley. The camp nestles on the apex of a permanent oxbow lagoon, offset by the magnificent Nchendeni Hills. Raised on wooden decking, each of Chendeni's four luxury tents has full en-suite facilities and its own veranda, overlooking the tranquil lagoon. Giant ebony trees shade the bar and dining area, which leads down to a fireplace on the banks of the lagoon - the perfect places for sundowners or port after dinner. Guests at Chindeni can enjoy guided walking safaris, or simply relax and enjoy the magical surroundings.

Days 5 to 7: Bilimungwe Trails Camp

An early morning rise on day five and, after a hearty breakfast, guests set off with their guide, scout, and porter. A gentle five mile, game-viewing walk brings guests to the intimate Bilimungwe Trails Camp in time for a well-earned lunch.

The comfortable rooms at Bilimungwe

Five miles downstream from Chindeni is Bilimungwe Trails Camp. Bilimungwe is nestled in riverine forest along the banks of the Luangwa River. The camp consists of four reed and thatch chalets with en-suite showers, toilet and double vanities. The rustic dining area and fully stocked bar offer clear views of Bilimangwe's water hole, and the abundant resident game that it attracts. The thatched dining canopy provides a cool and comfortable environment in which to enjoy this idyllic setting. Like Chendeni, this is a camp where guests explore with their guide and scout on foot, or may choose to relax and soak up the African bush around them.

Day 7: Safari Ends

A morning boat ride and road transfer to Mfuwe ends the Luangwa experience.

Add-ons

One of the advantages of this safari is that, with a minimum group size of four, guests can extend their itinerary to include more nights at Chamilandu, Chindeni, or Bilimungwe, or can add Kuyenda Bush Camp to the itinerary.

Wildlife in Kuyenda

Kuyenda Bush Camp is built on the banks of the Manzi river in a remote part of the South Luangwa National Park. Kuyenda is a very small and intimate safari camp by any standards - with only 3 en-suite chalets, Kuyenda is a luxurious bush camp offering exclusive personalised service and tranquility for no more than 6 guests. The camp offers game-drives and walks, accompanied by a professional guide and game scout. Guests spend two days exploring the area on foot and on game-drives.
