THE JACANA SAFARI |
|||
![]() The 13-day Jacana Safari is our highest quality "camping" safari in Botswana. It offers a combination of cross-country drives and light aircraft transfers to enable guests access to some of the best areas of Northern Botswana. Accommodation consists of a pre-erected tented camp in the Chobe River area, and small permanent tented camps in the Okavango Delta and Linyanti, which are booked exclusively for our groups; all tents have private facilities. A unique feature of this safari, is that many nights are spent in private concessions far from others in superb game-viewing country, where night drives and off-road driving are permitted. Guests are limited to eight, and a guide and hostess accompanies the safari throughout. (The itinerary below contains links to some of the properties described; by clicking on these links, you will open a new page in your browser. The island is covered with huge sausage trees, and a small channel runs in front of the camp. Kaparota offers land and water-based activities. Game drives, guided walks (at the discretion of the camp manager) mokoro rides and boating are available. Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Elephant and Red Lechwe are some of the game that may be viewed. Birding in the area is incredible, and species include the White Headed Vulture, African Hawk Eagle, Roufusnaped Lark, Meyers Parrot, and Pels fishing owl. On Day 4 the group is flown further into the Okavango Delta and transferred to our secluded mokoro trails camp for the next three nights. Situated on the Jao flats, just outside the Moremi Game Reserve, Jacana Camp is a water-oriented camp that offers mokoro and walking safaris all year round. The camp is set in one of the most densely populated wetland areas for Sitatunga and Red Lechwe. All the big game can be found in the area - elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo - but game concentrations all depend on the flow of the water. Pels Fishing Owl is a favorite amongst birders as well as greater and lesser Jacanas. Days 7 and 8: Linyanti Tented Camp From the Delta we will continue to Linyanti Tented Camp. This small, intimate tented camp is located on the banks of the Linyanti marshes in a private reserve, which abuts the western boundary of Chobe National Park. Two thirds of the Savuti Channel travels through this concession and we will spend some of our time travelling along the Savuti. The camp overlooks a large and tranquil lagoon. The area is best known for its large populations of elephant, which congregate in vast numbers during the winter months. Lion, leopard, wild dog, buffalo and all the plains game may be seen in this area. In the marshes one can view sitatunga, red lechwe, hippos and crocodiles. Guests can enjoy day and night game as well as walks, boating and canoeing. Days 9 to 11: Chobe National Park This morning we depart early for our drive north to Chobe, where our exclusive camp has been erected on a private site near the banks of the Chobe River. On the Chobe floodplains, elephants can be viewed in numbers not found elsewhere on the continent, while water birds such as egrets, herons, ducks and storks occur in profusion. Day 12: Victoria Falls It is a leisurely drive from the Chobe River to the famous Victoria Falls. Arrival at Ilala Lodge will be around midday, and guests will have the rest of your afternoon at leisure to explore the Falls, or take an optional sunset cruise up the Zambezi River. Accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis. Day 13: End of Safari Transfer to the Victoria Falls airport for onward flight.
