Tailor-made safaris and travel to Southern Africa

Ian McCallum

Ian McCallum was born in Zambia and schooled in Cape Town, South Africa.

He is a medical Doctor, Psychiatrist, Jungian Analyst and specialist wilderness guide/facilitator. He has written two books - "Wild Gifts" - an anthology of wilderness poems (1999) and "Thorns to Kilimanjaro" - a novel, published by David Philip (August 2000). He was also a contributing author to "Wilderness and the Human Spirit" (1997).

He is a founding member and first chairman of the Wilderness Leadership School (Cape) and a former Springbok rugby fullback (1970-1974).

With his background in medicine and psychology, Ian's passion and enthusiasm as a guide is best experienced with him in the bush, as he shares his approach to the dual nature of wilderness - the validity of the wild animals and their habitat on the one hand, and the historical significance of wilderness in the lives of human beings, on the other. He uniquely examines the interface between animal and human behaviour and biology, drawing attention to the evolution, bio-diversity and interdependence of the world's species. His approach to the wild encompasses :-

Historical: the land, the animals, the people, the poetry;

Biological: comparative anatomy and physiology of different species;

Evolution and classification of the species;

Ecological: niches, interaction and interdependence of the species (plants, insects, birds, mammals, reptiles, microscopic organisms);

Human interface with the wild (mythology, cosmology, medicinal, nutritional, psychological links);

Astronomy and the African night sky;

An introduction to Wilderness poetry;

Wild Business (applying ecological principles and what we learn from the animls to the market place)

His other passion is the night sky. Drawing on his knowledge of comparative mythology, astronomy and wilderness poetry, he guides his clients through the stars and constellations, in a light yet unforgettable way.

Sharon Mcallum, Ian's wife, was also born in Zambia. She was schooled in Zambia and South Africa. She is qualified as an Attorney and Conveyancer and has since become a yoga instructor and aromatherapist. She has experience in Camp/Lodge management and is an Assistant wilderness guide. She accompanies Ian when he guides.
