ADVENTURE SAFARIS

All safari camps and lodges in the Liyatshwa Safaris Portfolio employ excellent resident guides. Private guides typically have specialist knowledge in one or more subject areas, gained either through academic training or years of experience in the field, over and above what might be expected of the local guides at camps and lodges. When accompanying a group, they supplement the skills and knowledge of the resident guides at safari camps, and bring their unique insights to bear on their pet subjects. Below is a sample of scheduled departure guided safaris; private guides are also available to small groups, and guided safaris can be tailor-made to fit just about any interest or requirement. Guided safaris typically have themes based on the guide's field of specialization; by virtue of their interest and passion though, all specialist guides have an holistic appreciation of Africa, and these guided safaris make for an unforgettable all-round African experience.

(The webpages for the safaris listed below contain a lot if information and some high quality images. Please be patient if these take a few moments to download.)

The Liyatshwa Safari - 16 days / Five

Liyatshwa Safaris expert operators lead a small group through all the major highlights of southern Africa. A private plane stays with us throughout, facilitating the very diverse range of areas that we are able to visit in a relatively short period of time. Highlights include the 'Cradle of Humankind', the Namib Desert, Etosha National Park, the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve, Victoria Falls, and the Lower Zambezi Valley.

Africa's Super Predators and Mammals - 14 days / Five

This 14-day safari takes participants from the Cape Peninsula, up South Africa's east coast of Kwazulu-Natal, to the Kruger National Park, the mighty Zambezi River, and ends in Botswana's Okavango Delta. The diversity of species studied is dazzling: southern right whales, great white sharks, black and white rhino, crocodiles, hippo, lion, leopard, elephant and cheetah - and anything else that comes our way. It's an incredible safari, led by a great naturalist, travelling through many different eco-systems and habitats to give guests a wonderful, all-round experience.

Leopards (and Other Large Cats) Safari - 9 days / Five

Lex Hes wrote his book "Leopards of Londolozi" after studying these elusive animals for close on 10 years. He leads this safari through his favorite leopard haunts - Londolozi, Mombo, and Ruckomechi in Mana Pools. Guests have eight nights in incredible wildlife countryside - with a great guide and naturalist. We travel with an aircraft that stays with the group, so we eliminate wasted travel time, and maximize time on the ground in three of Africa's top wildlife areas.

The Ultimate Elephant Safari - 13 days / Five

This safari travels across southern Africa from West to East visiting the best elephant habitats in Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. We start with the rare and endangered desert elephant in the arid Namib Desert, then explore Etosha, the Okavango, Linyanti, Hwange and Mana Pools, viewing some of the largest herds of elephant in Africa. We will observe how rainfall and soil types have changed the elephant's family structure, appearance, and behaviour. The group will have aircraft with them throughout the safari to ensure that there is little wasted time getting from area to area. There will be ample time to learn about and observe these animals in their prime habitats under the expert guidance of Dr Ian McCallum.

The Ultimate Southern African Birding Safari - 13 days / Five

This 13-day safari starts in Windhoek, and explores all key southern African birding areas on or south of the Zambezi. We travel by private charter flights to minimize delays and maximize bird-watching time. Highlights include the Namib Desert and Walvis Bay, Etosha National Park, the Okavango Delta, the Upper and Lower Zambezi, and South Africa's Ndumo Game Reserve. The safari is led by Geoff Lockwood. Guests can extend onto Cape Town for some "fynbos" habitat and Cape birding.

Botswana's Best Birding Safari - 7 days / Five

This is a seven day safari in the Okavango Delta at a time of year when all the intra-African and European migrants are in the region, and breeding is at its peak. We travel with Ken Newman, one of the regions foremost bird painters and authors. The safari incorporates the beautiful Mombo and Xigera Camps for two contrasting habitats and birding experiences within the Okavango Delta. Most of the regions rarities, endemics or near endemics should be seen - from the Pels Fishing Owl to the diminutive Brown Firefinch.

The Pitta Birding Safari - Zimbabwe - 10 days / Five

This 10-day safari is led by one of Africa's foremost bird authors, Peter Steyn, who has spent much of his life birding in Zimbabwe. The safari begins in the Miombo woodlands around The River Club on the banks of the Zambezi River, upstream from Victoria Falls. From here guests travel to the Kalahari sands and open savanna of Hwange National Park for a very different birding experience. The safari ends in the scenic Mana Pools, during the time when the migratory Angola Pitta moves into this area to nest. The diversity of habitat types is matched by the diverse array of bird and mammal species covered by this safari.

Namibia's Best Birding Safari - 11 days / Five

This 11-day safari is guided by Peter Steyn, a world renown natural history author and photographer. The safari traverses several prime habitats in Namibia at a time of year when the migrant bird species are resident. The safari begins in the southern Namib region near Sossusvlei where guests enjoy nature-viewing and bird-watching in the dunes, before moving up to Swakopmund for birding and sight-seeing along the Atlantic coast. The next stop is Etosha, and the safari ends in the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains, where the focus is some of the Namibian endemic species.

Malawi and Zambia's Best Birding Safari - 11 days / Five

This 11-day safari is led by Geoff Lockwood, one of southern Africa's top birding experts, authors, painters and wildlife lecturers. Malawi has many National Parks, each harboring a number of different vegetation types and bird species. Guests start in Liwonde National Park where the Shire River provides some of Africa's best birding. Guests then move to the spectacular mountain grasslands of the Nyika Plateau for some of the specialities of that area, before crossing into Zambia for some fantastic birding along the Luangwa River in the South Luangwa National Park.

Rock Art of Southern Africa Safari - 15 days / Five

This is a wonderful 15 day safari visiting some of the most important rock art of southern Africa. From sites in South Africa's Cederberg, Drakensberg, and Malelane Mountains, we move on to the spectacular cave art in Zimbabwe's Matobo Hills, then Botswana's Tsodilo Hills, ending at the Twyfelfontein rock engravings in Namibia. We stay at some of southern Africa's loveliest camps and lodges and, in addition to rock art, will have the opportunity to do some great game-viewing, and interact with the local communities representing a diverse array of cultural groups.
