BOTSWANA'S BEST BIRDING BIRDING SAFARI![]() |
||
| This safari is accompanied by Ken Newman. Ken is perhaps the best-known bird expert in southern Africa where his popular field guide - "Newman's Birds of Southern Africa," is owned and used by thousands of bird enthusiasts. He is one of the region's foremost bird artists and is the author of ten bird books, including field guides to Botswana and Malawi. This seven-day safari takes place in the Okavango Delta at a time of year when all the intra-African and European migrants are in the region, and breeding is at its peak. Guests travel to Mombo and Xigera Camps for two contrasting habitats and birding experiences. Most of the region's rarities, endemics or near endemics should be seen - from the Pels Fishing Owl to the diminutive Brown Firefinch. Within the waterways, savannahs and lagoons, countless herons, ducks, jacanas, eagles, vultures, ibis, storks, plovers and all the "LBJ's" should be found. Some of the rare specials include Slaty Egrets, Wattled Cranes, Coppery-tailed Coucals, Black Coucals, Thick-billed Cuckoo, Chirping Cisticola and Lesser Jacana. Xigera Camp is situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta within the Moremi Game Reserve. It is located on Paradise Island, in a shady forest which is surrounded by permanent water, making it a great base for exploring the delicate channels and waterways of the beautiful Okavango Delta. The camp consists of eight luxurious tented rooms, with ceiling fans, en suite facilities and an additional outdoor shower. Each room is raised off the ground on a wooden deck, which allows for superb views of the floodplain to the east of camp and its active waterhole. Activities focus mainly on mekoro rides through the Okavango Delta's filigree of networked channels and islands, providing for the most intimate and unobtrusive way of experiencing this great natural wonder. Another highlight is guided nature walks. Game drives are also offered if water levels permit. In: 03 November 2002 Out: 06 November 2002 Basis: Inclusive of all meals, game activities, laundry and drinks (except imported premium brands) November 6-9: Mombo Camp After the morning game activity and brunch, guests are collected at Xigera's airstrip and flown by light charter aircraft to Mombo Camp, where accommodation has been reserved for three nights. Mombo Camp is situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief's Island, within the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. The camp offers incredible exclusivity and privacy in the central Okavango, coupled with abundant big game, arguably the best in Botswana, and wonderful birding opportunities. Mombo, with only nine tents, retains the charm of a tented camp while providing magnificent accommodation. All tented rooms are superbly appointed; each with ceiling fans, en suite facilities, twin indoor showers and an additional outdoor shower. Activities at Mombo are conducted in open Landrovers. Short mid-day foot trails may be undertaken, if guests would like to experience nature in close proximity.
