VUMBURA CAMP

Mekoro is one of the highlights at Vumbura

Vumbura Camp - and it's sister camp Little Vumbura - are located north of Mombo, in the neighboring northern private reserve, within the Okavango Delta. The privacy and remoteness of this area is one of Vumbura's main attractions, along with its great wildlife and superb all around Okavango experience.

The confortable luxury tents

Vumbura Camp is nestled into pristine indigenous forest. Accommodation is in eight large, luxury tented rooms, each with en suite facilities as well as an outdoor shower. The rooms are tastefully decorated using whicker, wood and batik textiles, and give Vumbura guests a wonderful feeling of remote Africa - while still being comfortable. Common areas include a dining room, living room, bar, and attractive plunge pool set into a wooden deck. A raised wooden walkway leads to a charming tearoom, where one can while away the afternoon, reading or just enjoying the spectacular view across the floodplain.

The rooms at Little Vumbura

Located on the same concession - on an intimate island in the permanent channels of the Okavango Delta - is Little Vumbura Camp. Little Vumbura consists of just five tents under a spreading canopy of ancient ebony, marula, knobthorn, and fig trees. Each tent is large and spacious, with en suite facilities, as well as an outside shower. The dining room and bar have been cleverly designed to incorporate the existing trees, adding to the feeling of remote wilderness.

Exploring the Delta by boat

Activities on the Vumbura concession are plentiful and varied, utilizing both the scenic waterways and dry savanna. Mokoro excursions, walks, boating and game drives are all on offer. Experienced professional guides accompany guests on activities to ensure that all interaction with the wilderness is exciting, informative, and safe.

Lions at a kill

Guests can go out by boat in the morning and see Hippos, Crocodiles, Red Lechwe and all the aquatic wildlife - and then travel out by open Land Rover in the afternoon to see Elephant, Sable and all the dry savanna game (including the major predators). The same diversity is also to be found in the region's birds, and birders will enjoy the combination of all the Okavango water 'specials' and woodland species.

In all, Vumbura and Little Vumbura Camps offers a great, authentic 'Delta' experience, combining all the comforts that the modern traveler could expect with a sense of remote wilderness that is so unique to this unspoiled jewel of Africa.

Eco-tourism angle

The rare African painted wolf

The Vumbura concession is an exciting example of the way eco-tourism in southern Africa is evolving. The camps came about as a result of a partnership between the rural community to the north of the concession (under whose management this prime piece of wilderness was placed by the Botswana government), and the world-renowned wildlife film makers Dereck and Beverly Joubert (who are famous as having producers of some of the National Geographic Society's most highly rated wildlife films).

The villagers formed the "Okavango Community Trust", and entered into a partnership with the Joubert's and with Wilderness Safaris, Botswana's leading camp operator; the community is now directly benefiting from substantial cash and auxiliary returns, jobs, skills transfer, and training. As a result, their disposition towards wildlife has changed significantly, and they have become some of the most ardent protectors of game and wilderness in Botswana. Many people today believe that it is only through such direct eco-tourism benefits to adjacent communities that Africa's wildlife has any hope of survival, and Vumbura Camp is at the cutting edge of this development.
