Tailor-made safaris and travel to Southern Africa |
SKELETON COAST CAMP![]() |
|
| The Skeleton coast is one of the most remote and unspoilt areas of Africa, offering an incredible diversity of experiences. We offer two safaris, one for four nights/five days (departing every Saturday) and another for three nights/four days (departing every Wednesday). Both are fly-in safaris, starting and ending in Windhoek. ![]() The Skeleton Coast Park is one of our planet's most inhospitable, but hauntingly beautiful places - it is wild, desolate and uninhabited by humans. It boasts everything from roaring sand dunes, windswept plains, towering canyons, and salt pans to seal colonies, shipwrecks and one of the most productive fishing grounds found anywhere. In addition, fresh water springs permeate through barren sands to create desert oases that sustain pockets of wildlife. ![]() Springbok, Gemsbok (Oryx), the rare desert elephant, ostrich, Cape fur seals, jackal and brown hyena - and even cheetah on rare occasions, eke out an existence in this rugged terrain, along with unusual vegetation such as the ancient welwitschia which has adapted to the harsh conditions. ![]() Accommodation is at Skeleton Coast Camp, a 10 bedded luxury tented camp located in the heart of the reserve. It is built on an island in a dry riverbed about 20km inland from the coastline. Each tent is large and roomy and has a bathroom en suite. There is a wonderful old gnarled leadwood tree - which offers shelter from the elements and serves as the dining room for outdoor meals. ![]() The Skeleton Coast area is so vast and there is so much to see and experience that activities last the whole day - the Skeleton Coast Camp enjoys exclusive use of an enormous 660,000 acre concession with the National Park. Guests leave camp after breakfast and spend the entire day exploring the park by Landrover and on foot. Visits to authentic Himba settlements, just outside the part, are an absolute highlight! A picnic lunch is enjoyed out in the wild before returning to base camp in the late afternoon. ![]() Although a desert, temperatures are very moderate year-round, and travelers should not be put off by the prospect of long days in the blistering sun. The Atlantic Ocean's Benguela Current brings cool, plankton-rich waters up from Antarctica, and modulates the heat of the desert. Mornings are characterized by a light mist as the cool ocean breeze meets the warm desert air, and average temperatures year-round range from a high of 82°F to a low of 50°F. ![]() The Skeleton Coast is a very special place, and few camps enjoy wilder or more remote settings than the Skeleton Coast Camp. Although only in existence since April 2000, many seasons travelers have already declared this one of the most unique and magical camps in Africa. |
