RIVER MEADOW MANOR![]() |
|
![]() River Meadow Manor is an exquisitely restored estate dating from the 1920's, a wedding gift to General Jan Smuts' eldest daughter, Santa. In 1998, it was creatively and tastefully renovated into a vibrant eight roomed boutique-hotel which has already developed a fine reputation for its artistic ambience, tranquil setting and delicious food. ![]() Its living room, dining room and each of its eight bedrooms is individually decorated with an eclectic mix of heirloom antiques, contemporary African and Indonesian furnishings. The result is eclectic: kelim with Cape oak, white linen with black slate, granite and terracotta - but all combines harmoniously into a symphony of color, shapes and light. An interesting feature of Meadow Manor is the century old blue gum tree in the garden which has been carved by a local artist to reflect the legend of Fanghorn from Tolkein's book, Lord of the Rings. ![]() Each of the individually furnished rooms celebrates historical figures who were prominent in the area: Mzilikazi, the first king of the Matabele; Princess Eirene of Greece; King George of the Hellenes and King George VI; Mohandas Gandhi; famed botanist Dr Illtyd Pole Evans and General Smuts. Six rooms are available in the Manor House and two private cottages nestle between the Manor and the river on the edge of the meadow. General Smuts' house, now the Smuts House Museum, is within easy walking distance of River Meadow Manor. ![]() Meals at Meadow Manor are served in its lovely dining room reminiscent of Tuscany, with creamy yellow marbleized walls and long white tablecloths. The food also has Mediterranean overtones, mixed with the flavors of Africa, Europe and Asia, thus resembling and complementing the hotel's decor. River Meadow Manor is a truly special property that successfully melds comfort with style and provides a restful haven for the weary traveler. |
