PANORAMA ROUTE

PORTFOLIO

Not more than 2 hours' drive from the southern gates into the Kruger Park (and all the private lodges in the Sabi Sand, Timbavati, and Manyeleti reserves), a scenic little road between Graskop and Blydepoort, cuts the Blyde River Canyon. This is the third biggest canyon in the world after America's Grand Canyon and Namibia's Fish River Canyon, and a truly spectacular sight. Along the road, visitors can pull over at specific view points to gaze across this great gorge at such appropriately named spots at 'God's Window' and 'World's End'. Another highlight of the 'Panorama Route' are the waterfalls. Rivers course their way through heavily eroded mountains to plummet in spectacular waterfalls with names reflecting the diverse origins of the gold speculators who settled this area in the 1870s - Mac Mac falls (named after Scots miners), the Berlin and Lisbon Falls. Bourke's Luck Potholes are an extraordinary rock formation that once brought fame and fortune to their prospecting owner who correctly surmised that they contained alluvial gold. The town of Pilgrim's rest hosts a number of restored buildings dating back to the years of the gold boom.
