At around 80 million years old, the Namib Desert is one of the planet's oldest and most spectacular deserts. It is an incredibly diverse desert - with landscapes ranging from towering sand dunes to rocky mountains; it is also one of the only deserts in the world that abuts right onto an ocean. One of the most dramatic features of the Namib is the mighty dunes at Sossusvlei. Widely considered to be the highest in the world, many of these dunes reach over 1200 feet above the surrounding desert. Watching the sunrise over this ancient landscape, and marvelling at dunes' the range of shimmering colors through the course of a day is one of southern Africa's most spiritual experiences.
