MATUSADONA WATER WILDERNESS

Wildlife comes down to drink from the lake - right in front of the chalets

Matusadona Water Wilderness is like no other camp! The concept of floating wooden chalets on lake Kariba, tethered to the skeletons of partially submerged hard-wood trees, is unique and very special.

Lake Kariba and the setting of the lodge

The lodge's concession area is within Matusadona National Park, a wonderful game reserve on the southern shores of Lake Kariba. Matusadona is famous as one of the few reserves in Zimbabwe that still contain black rhino, and guests have a good chance of seeing these prehistoric creatures. It is also said to have the highest concentration of lions in Zimbabwe. The fluctuating water level of the lake has created a small grassland around the lake's perimeter, which attracts antelope, elephant, buffalo, and predators. Needless to say the lake teems with hippos and crocodiles.

Stalking black rhino on foot offers real adventure

Matusadona Water Wilderness offers a broad range of activities, offering guests a very complete wildlife experience. Boating and canoeing offer the opportunity of viewing animals from a very different perspective as they come down to the water's edge to drink and graze; it is often possible to get very close to animals in this way. Game-drives are also offered, as well as walks with an armed and fully licensed professional guide; tracking black rhino, elephant, buffalo, and lion on foot is one of Africa's most exhilarating experiences. Fisherman have good opportunities to catch 'tiger fish', Africa's best sporting fish.

The comfortable chalet interiors

There are two identical camps, each nestled into an exclusive bay. One has four chalets and the other five. Each unit has its own sheltered wrap-around verandah, a fabulous place to be quietly alone, or with someone special. Often game can be observed drinking at the water's edge and there are a plethora of birds. A selection of drinks is provided in a cooler box inside the room, which is replenished daily. Inside, the decor reflects the water theme well with cool blue tones, airy wicker furniture, sisel floor covering, and crisp white cotton sheets adorning the bed.

The 'mothership'

Outside each chalet a gleaming brass bell can be found which, when rung, will signal that you wish to be collected. Guests are transported between their chalet and the "mothership"- a larger structure comprising the living and dining area and an upper sun deck - by canoe or motorized pontoon. Returning to your chalet after dinner is very special: illuminated with hanging gas lanterns, they resemble bejeweled beacons. Then, fall asleep to the sound of the lake gently lapping around your chalet and the chorus of the resident hippos. For the right guests Matusadona Water Wilderness is a fairytale come true, a thoroughly unique experience which can capture your soul with its magic.
