LUNGA RIVER LODGE![]() |
|
| Lunga River Lodge is the only lodge located on the remote Lunga River, a perennial tributary of the Kafue River. The lodge lies on the northern boundary of the Kafue National Park - Africa's largest National Park. The habitat in the Lunga area is comprised of open grasslands, miombo woodlands, and riverine forest, and supports a very good species diversity, both in terms of plains game and predators, although concentrations of game are not particularly high. Interesting sightings include the near-endemic Puku, while Zambian endemics such as Lichtenstein's Hartebeest and Defassa waterbuck also occur in this section of the park. Accommodation at Lunga River Lodge is in six thatched A-Frame chalets. Each is fully en-suite, with shower, flush toilet, and vanity basin. The chalets are simple yet comfortable. Common areas include a thatched dining room, a reading room, and a bar. The camp also boasts a plunge pool, where guests can cool and refresh themselves. One of the highlights of the lodge is the platform adjoining the bar, which extends over the river, offering beautiful views both up- and downstream. From its isolated location, Lunga offers a wide range of activities, from sundowner cruises, canoeing, and fishing on the river, to game-drives in open Landrovers, night-drives, and guided walks within the reserve. Our favorite activities were those based on the river, with sundowner cruises on such a tranquil and unspoiled river being especially memorable. The hippos in the river are among the most relaxed we have encountered anywhere in Africa, making for very pleasant canoe trips. Lunga River Lodge is a simple yet comfortable and very pleasant lodge in a wonderful location. Its status as the only lodge on the river (and in this section of the Kafue Park) is a distinct advantage, and the active involvement of owner Ed Smyth in the camp's management makes for superb service and adds a very personal touch. |
