KING'S POOL CAMP |
|
| King's Pool Camp is located in the enormous Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, adjoining Chobe National Park. The camp is located on King's Pool Lagoon along the Linyanti River. The Linyanti Reserve is one of the largest private concessions in Botswana, comprising well over a quarter million acres of unspoiled wilderness. The Linyanti River attracts a lot of game, particularly in the dry winter months, when some of the largest herds of elephant in Africa congregate in this area. The bulk of the reserve is comprised of open grassland, with riverine forests, mixed terminalia woodland, and the dry Savuti Channel adding to the habitat diversity. Guests are accommodated at King's Pool in ten luxurious tented rooms. Facilities are en suite, with the addition of an outdoor shower. Each tent is set high on a wooden deck with wonderful views over the King's Pool Lagoon and its wildlife. The camp is often resonant with a cacophony of animal sounds, from the pre-dawn chorus of birds, grunting hippos, barking baboons, trumpeting elephants and roaring lions. The camp's living room, bar and dining room are set under thatch, and there is a swimming pool built into the expansive deck of the main lodge. There is an open-air "kgotla" for dining under the stars. Being located on a private reserve adjoining Chobe National Park, King's Pool enjoys all the great game-viewing of Chobe without the restrictive rules of the Park. The camp offers guided game-drives in open safari vehicles, as well as night-drives, and nature walks. Apart from the Reserve's enormous elephant population, there are also very good concentrations of general plains game, and all the major predators are resident and regularly sighted, including lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dogs. There are also numerous hides on the reserve, where guests can sit in silence to observe and photograph animals. Another firm favorite at King's Pool is the double decker boat which cruises the Linyanti River (water levels permitting), again offering a different perspective on game-viewing and enjoying the wilderness setting. Eco-tourism angle The concession to the Linyanti Reserve belongs to a leading southern Africa conservation figure, and the reserve is managed by Wilderness Safaris, one of the most ecologically-minded camp operators in southern Africa. Although hunting is technically permitted on the concession, the owner and managers have waived their rights to allow hunting on the Reserve, thereby foregoing around US$300,000 in annual revenues so that the animals have the best possible opportunity to prosper, and guests have the best possible game-viewing experience. Staff are also involved in game counts and censuses to monitor the conservation efforts on the reserve. |
