Great Zimbabwe is shrouded in mystery. Theories abound with regard to its origins, use and eventual decline, but evidence is as yet inconclusive. Most experts hypothesize that during the eleventh or twelfth century a vast empire arose in central southern Africa, trading gold and ivory to the Arab forts on the Indian Ocean coast in exchange for oriental luxuries. The empire's capital, "Great Zimbabwe," was a city of about twenty thousand inhabitants ruled by kings and priests, which held sway across the interior for hundreds of years. Its stone masons built towering granite walls and an impregnable hill fortress to guard their treasure and the mysterious soapstone bird monoliths. But time brought change and intrigue whispering through the royal apartments and sacred shrines. By the end of the fifteenth century the great city lay abandoned, its sacred corridors and high walls silent and deserted. The legends of this ancient empire cannot be known, but they can be felt by the visitor to this extraordinary and well-preserved open-air museum.
