GARONGA SAFARI CAMP

Only 7 glorious tents

Garonga is an extraordinary camp, demonstrating a wonderful harmony between man and nature. Located in the Makalali Wildlife Conservancy, Garonga offers a very special safari experience.

A typical game-drive in an open safari vehicle

Lying just to the west of the Kruger Park, the Makalali Conservancy is located in prime 'lowveld' bush. With the exception of buffalo, the Conservancy offers virtually all of Africa's species of big game (including elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, giraffe and zebra) as well as 350 species of birds.

A guided nature walk

Garonga takes a creative and holistic approach to safari activities, encouraging guests to experience the African bush in a more intimate way, with nature walks, outdoor bush baths, and sleep-outs on a wooden platform under the stars; naturally game-drives in open safari vehicles are also available, offering fantastic opportunities to view Africa's wildlife at close quarters.

The huge, billowing white tents

Each of Garonga's seven tented rooms is an organic flowing space which spans fifty-five square meters. The floor and walls are sculpted from clay. "The result is as if termites had combined forces over aeons to build us a monument celebrating nature." The billowy ceiling is made of cream colored canvas, a lofty fifty meters tall. The effect is simply idyllic and reminiscent of Lawrence of Arabia. Inside, lighting is muted, with bulbs encased in lovely paper mache shells. Only all-natural fabrics in sandy colors are used. Attention to detail is exceptional, down to the Zen sandbox and softly chiming cloisonné balls, used as sink-stoppers.

The pool with its glorious view

The main lodge is similarly special. It is a lofty expansive space with hand tooled tables, pan-African artifacts beautifully positioned, candles nestled into specially designed holes in the walls, luxurious pillows adorning ample couches in wonderful fabrics. Dining often takes place on the roughly hewn wooden balcony, around the pool or in the bush.

A picnic in the bush

Cuisine at Garonga is exceptional and well presented. The wine cellar is the pride of the affable owner, who would be pleased to personally help you select a vintage.

The emphasis at Garonga is on relaxation

At Garonga the emphasis is on relaxation and rejuvenation. To facilitate this, two kikoi's (a type of sarong) are provided in each room. It is suggested that they be worn during one's stay, even to dinner! Reflexology and aromatheraphy are offered in a secluded sala in the bush. A soak in the large Victorian bathtub nestled in the bush is also an unforgettably rejuvenating experience.

For many, Garonga represents a safari for the soul, a time to find inspiration in natural life, to replenish lost energy. We couldn't agree more, and feel that Garonga is a perfect place to begin or end one's African explorations.
