THE WHITE 'TRIBES' OF SOUTHERN AFRICA![]() |
|
|
The first European to set foot on South African soil was Bartholomew Dias in 1488. For nearly 200 years there were temporary European settlements at the Cape of Good Hope before the first permanent settlement was to be established in 1652. From here these white Africans spread ever deeper into the hinterland, and today they are to be found across Southern Africa. Their influence is to be found everywhere, from local languages to religion and architecture. Although generally classed as one group, there are many different ethnic backgrounds behind the white people of Southern Africa, each bringing its own customs and traditions to the great Southern African melting pot. One thing that they all share in common with each other, as well as the region's other ethnic groups, is a sense of identity and pride as Southern Africans. ![]() Back to Liyatshwa Safaris Culture |
