TOWNSHIP LIFE

A colorful taxi-rank in Soweto

Southern Africa's townships are vibrant urban metropolises, well-springs of music, literature, poetry, and art.

Perhaps the most famous of all Africa's townships is Soweto (an abbreviation for 'South western townships') just outside Johannesburg. With 4.5 million residents, greater Soweto is the biggest black city in Africa. It is home to an incredible diversity of cultural and tribal groups from across the continent, each of which has injected into the community their own traditions and customs. With such a vibrant combination of cultures, it is hardly surprising that Soweto is at the cutting edge of the 'African renaissance'. It is also home to two Nobel Peace Laureates - Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu. Although unaccompanied trips into Soweto and other townships are not advisable, excellent tours can be arranged providing for a truly memorable encounter with the proud inhabitants of these dynamic communities.
