THE NAMIB DESERT
The Namib is an incredibly picturesque and diverse desert, a landscape photographer's dream. In the north, the mountains of Damaraland (left) shimmer in various shades of orange, red, and purple, giving way to enormous sand dunes (top) in the south which likewise display a myriad of color variations through the course of the day.
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei (right) are not only eerily beautiful, they are also home to the world's highest sand dunes. Along the 'Skeleton Coast' in the west lie strewn the wrecks of hapless ships and carcasses of whales, testimony to the treacherous seas and shifting sandbanks that plagued early seafarers. Throughout this harsh landscape live a surprising variety of specially evolved animals, the most famous being the unique desert-adapted elephant (below).
