THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND![]() |
|
|
The 'Cradle of Humankind' is a series of three ancient caves just outside Johannesburg, all within two miles of each other, the most well-known of which is the complex of Sterkfontein Caves (top). Between them, these three caves have produced a significant portion of the clues to our evolution and development as a species. Approximately one third of all the world's hominid fossils dating from between 3.3 and 1 million years ago have been discovered in these caves. Fossils from these and other sites in Southern Africa finally (and posthumously) proved Charles Darwin to be correct: Africa was indeed the birthplace of mankind, a fact unpopular with racial supremacist views in the northern hemisphere during the first part of this century.
