SAMPLE ITINERARY 10

Highlights of the Cape and Kwazulu-Natal

Day 1

You will arrive at Cape Town airport, where you will collect a Group A hire car from Avis. You will have this car for the duration of your stay in the Cape; Group A cars have 1.3 litre engines, with manual transmission and a radio-tapedeck. The car comes with 100% insurance cover and unlimited mileage. You will drive from the airport to Stellenbosch (an easy drive of about 30 minutes), where you will check into River Manor right in the center of this historic little town.

Days 1 to 3

You will spend 2 nights at River Manor with breakfast included. This will give you time to explore the town of Stellenbosch, as well as the surrounding Cape Winelands.

Day 3

Today you will depart Stellenbosch, and drive roughly 3 and a half hours north to the wonderful Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve in the Cedarberg Mountains of the Northern Cape.

Days 3 to 5

You will spend 2 nights at Bushmans Kloof on a full-board basis (all meals and teas), with all activities and the service of professional guides included. At this stage you are booked into a suite, and on the waiting list for a standard room.

Day 5

Today you will depart from Bushmanskloof, and drive roughly 3 hours south to Cape Town, where you will be staying at De Waterkant Lodge.

Days 5 to 10

You will spend 5 nights at De Waterkant, with breakfast included. This will give you time to catch up with old friends and explore some of the many highlights of Cape Town.

Day 10

Today you will make the relatively short drive (60-90 minutes) to the town of Hermanus on Walker Bay, famous for its amazing whale-viewing; you will be staying at Whale Rock Lodge.

Days 10 to 12

You will spend 2 nights at Whale Rock with breakfast included; besides the whales, there are lovely beaches, and some fabulous hikes in the mountains behind Hermanus.

Day 12

You will depart from Whale Rock Lodge this morning and drive to Cape Town airport (roughly 60-90 minutes), from where you will catch a flight to Durban. At Durban airport you will collect another Avis Group A car (again with all the features described earlier) which you will keep for the remainder of your stay; with your own car you will have the flexibility to explore some of the highlights of KwaZulu-Natal. From the airport, you will drive to Old Haliwell Country Inn (roughly 90 minutes). You will overnight at Old Haliwell with breakfast and dinner included.

Day 13

Today you will drive deeper into the Drakensberg mountains, to Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse (roughly 90 minute drive).

Days 13 to 16

You will spend three nights at Cleopatra, exploring the beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, with breakfast, dinner, and teas included.

Day 16

From Cleopatra, you will drive north and east into the heart of Zululand, bound for Babanango Valley Lodge; the drive should take you roughly two-and-a-half hours.

Days 16 to 18

You will spend two nights at Babanango Valley Lodge, delving into the turbulent and heroic history of this region; your stay will be on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

Day 18

Today you will set out from Babanango Valley Lodge for the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, where you will be staying at Hluhluwe River Lodge, on the border of the park. This is roughly a 90 minute drive.

Days 18 to 20

You will spend 2 nights at Hluhluwe River Lodge on a full-board basis (all meals and teas), including all activities, and the services of your professional guides.

Day 20

Today you will depart from Hluhluwe River Lodge, heading for Johannesburg. You will overnight at Tamboti Ridge Cottage (roughly 2 hours from Hluhluwe River Lodge), located in very scenic surroundings, close to the Pongola Nature Reserve. Breakfast is included.

Day 21

At a leisurely pace, you will complete the drive to Johannesburg, which will take you between 5 and 6 hours. Your flight will not depart until the evening, so there is no major rush. At the airport you will drop off the car, and bid farewell to Africa.
